Owl Pellets
The entire fourth grade here at GIS is learning about owl pellets this quarter. Our class has just began the breakdown process of the pellets and they are very excited to learn what creature had been eaten by the owl. We are using pellets from a barn owl. We are still determining what the creatures are by looking at the bone, but some of the discoveries have been: a couple of small birds, mice, shrews, and moles. Here are some pictures of the class and the owl pellets.
Mr. Rembusch sent us a video that shows how owl pellets are expelled from an owl. The students and several teachers have really enjoyed this video. You may not want to watch this if you are getting ready to eat.

Bianca, What a wonderful post! I enjoyed reading what you had to say. Thank you for the compliments about the blog. We enjoy communicating on here. Please feel free to post when you have time, and invite your family to join in and leave comments. Especially about the cell phone debate……. The owl pellets are a great deal of fun. This is the first time I have experienced owl pellets, and I enjoy the excitement it has brought to the 4th grade……..About the Math Fact Challenge, the class looks forward to competing with your class. I am sure you and your classmates will provide stiff competition. Good Luck. Have a great weekend. – Mr. Fletcher

Hi Mr. Fletcher,
I really enjoy digging through owl pellets–they are like little treasure chests of science.
Here’s my reply to your questions on Huzzah!
I have inherited a group of willing, passionate readers. They really value our silent reading time each day. You can tell by their reviews on their individual blogs that they have strong feelings about the books they choose. I am investigating using SHELFARI as a place to post reviews of books. Right now we are big on “word of mouth”, informal “this is a great book because…” conversations at the end of silent reading. I am not familiar with Accelerated Reader. I do need to make more time for conferences…ah, must create more islands of time!
Good luck to you and your students!

Hi Mr Fletcher and class!
Answers to your questions:
1. We are between 10 and 12 years old – we are in Grades 5 and 6
2. We don’t play baseball, but some sports we play are: basketball, cricket, netball, volleyball, surfing, football (Australian Rules – AFL… look it up on the net), golf, dancing, karate
3. There are 29 awesome and fabulous students in our class\
4. At the moment we are studying volume in maths – check out the videos on our blog soooo funny
5. Kangaroos – every one in our grade has a pet kangaroo! No not really. There are some kangaroos in our area, but they are mostly in our bush area – especially the outback.
6. The weather at the moment is soooo hot! It’s the end of spring, coming into summer, but this week we have had 30-36 degrees celsius every day!!! Not sure what that is in F???
7. It doesn’t really snow in Melbourne, but in the mountains in Victoria there are lots of snowfields in winter. We live right on the beach, so we don’t get snow in Ocean Grove.
8. School begins at 8:45 and ends at 3:15pm. We start at the start of February, and finish in the middle of December. We have 4 terms with 2 weeks holiday in between, except for the summer holidays
9. Projects – we have just completed a mega book report ‘Cereal Box Book Report’ (we will post photos), and we are about to do lots of mini projects linked to our ‘Healthy Bodies’ topic
10. In our school, we have ‘Learning Communities’: a Junior, Middle and Senior. We are in the senior, and we are in Room 7, hence S7! It’s only new for our school this year…
Questions for you!!!
1. What is your favourite baseball team?
2. What instruments do people in your class play?
3. Do you like ShortStack (um, if you even know who they are???)
4. Who are some of your favourite basketball players?
5. Do you ever go to New York?
6. What time do you start school?
7. How many people are in your school?
8. What are your school holidays like?
9. Do you have a class pet?
10. Do you like AC/DC? What other bands do you like?
That’s all for now!!! Thanks for your cool questions!
